June 2011: Denkai's Hoofin It Home Adoption Extravaganza was a great success. Two horses and nine dogs found forever homes. Individuals had the opportunity to experience all of Denkai's Adoption Center facility including our newly opened thrift store, adoptable dogs and cats, our Equine facilities, and our educational center.

This will be an annual event and we hope that it will be even more fun next year!

Just a fraction of Denkai's team, these amazing boys work hard for the animals! Casey Babcock, Elijah Stone, Bastian Kruidenier, and Jake Shafer.

House Rabbit Society brought some adorable bunnies and tons of wonderful literature. It was great having them!

Amber Herrell with Shilo Acres Horse Rescue brought some beautiful horses, this amazing Belgian is still looking for a home!

Bee Quick Horseshoeing, Pat Hall is one of our many amazing sponsors. He helped Scott Clawson with the farrier clinic!

Cheeks Academy of Beauty Culture gave $5 haircuts and raised $50 for Denkai!

Darrin Hill, with his adopted pup. This little one was one of 7 puppies abandoned in Briggsdale, CO at the age of 5 weeks. What a trooper!

Holding pens at the Greeley facility: Bint Joi, Colby, and Dollar, all rescue horses are still seeking homes. These sweeties are all intermediate to experienced level ability.

Sandi Lucas and her husband say hello to the three blind baby goats that they so graciously took home to foster for Denkai. She will be keeping one of these sweeties permanently! The other two are still seeking homes and would like to stay together!

Judy Swenson talks with adopters regarding Bint Joi. In working to find the right match, they ended up adopting Lacy, another one of our wonderful Arabian mares!

Goats of Denkai!

Denkai houses more than 10 wonderful and ornery goats. These precious babies have come to us from a variety of backgrounds, some from other rescue organizations, some from breeding and neglect situations that have gotten out of hand, and others impounded through local humane societies.

Boer goats such as the white and brown big boy in the photo below are harvested for their meat as a practice in the farming industry. Our big guy luckily escaped that fate thanks to your generous support!

DJ the Pot belly is Lovin It!

Ever seen a pot bellied pig smile! That's right! DJ is all grins and talk for his daily meal.

These eye capturing and amazing photographs taken by Judy Swenson tell a wonderful tale for this little fella!

Pot Bellied pigs, once a craze for their small size, ability to house train and cleanliness have phased out quite a bit and are ending up in rescue and sanctuary more and more. These smart babies require a very specific diet, routine tusk and toe trimming as well as vaccinations on a very basic maintenance level.

Charlotte's Adventures!

The Great and Grand Adventures of Charlotte the Pig!

Charlotte, once a tiny piglet rescued by Larimer Humane Society and since residing with Denkai Animal Sanctuary has grown over the last two years from a 150 pound playful piglet into the beautiful and sweet 800 pound hog whom has become one of Judy's favorite farm subjects!

Not only does Charlotte help to clean her pen, she makes sure to get a visit in to her senior horse and pot bellied pig friends for all of the Denkai "dirt".

Charlotte is the lucky recipient on a daily basis of warm food, lots of straw bedding and the oh so wonderful daily belly scratchings of Miss Judy!

Charlotte loves visitors and will not hesitate to win them over with her funny antics!

Jack Needs a Home!

Jack is a precious little kitten who was dropped off at the adoption center with puss filled eyes due to a massive infection.

Our veterinarian was unable to save one of Jack's eyes, but was able to preserve the other. This kitten is so super sweet, an absolute love bug and needs a home to call his own.

Moon Gets a Second Chance!

Moon is a precious 18 year old pony. He was living near Dixon, WY and though his owners were kind-hearted, they allowed his hooves to grow a bit too long over a period of years.

This type of growth can be deadly for horses and ponies. It can cause issues with their tendons, founder, or they can grow to the point in which the horse can no longer get up to walk.

Moon is lucky, his owners were kind enough to give him up willingly knowing that it was in his best interest. The community watched this little horse knowing he needed help, but did not know where to turn. Thanks to Christi Chapman and other local residents, Denkai was able to step in and help.

We need aid in covering Moon's care (dental work, hoof trimming, medication) and transport costs now totaling $500.00. Even a $10 contribution helps tremendously.

Updates: Clide and Ivan

Clide is doing very well in his foster home with John Cowie. The surgeons were unable to save his leg because the injury was too old, so it had to be amputated. You would never know it with this pup, he has learned to balance his weight well, is still very playful and is desperately seeking his forever home! Great News!

Ivan the pyrenees puppy survived parvo thanks to the wonderful staff of Planned Pethood Plus in Denver. Funding for his care in the amount of $500 was successfully raised and he has been adopted by two wonderful supporters who will give him an amazing forever home!

Urgent! Clide Needs Surgery

Clide is a 1 year old Wirehair Pointer. He was brought into our Adoption Center by a local municipality. Upon evaluation by Dr. Kidd, he was found to have a fractured femur, an old injury that needs surgery.

Estimated cost is $1,000-$1,200.

Ivan, 6 week old Pyrenees; URGENT

Ivan is a 6 week old Great Pyrenees puppy who upon entering our Adoption Center was diagnosed by our veterinarian with Parvo. He has been hospitalized with a veterinarian in Denver. Authorities are looking into the breeding operation who sold this puppy to the individual home that surrendered him. He is under the minimum age requirement for sale.

Veterinary bills for this baby are estimated at between $500 and $700.

Ivan is still stable today 6/22/2010 and showing signs of improvement.

Lacy's new home!

Lacy is a Great Dane that was transferred to K9 Bed and Biscuit and then to Denkai when we took over. She is a wonderful dog, house trained and very sweet. Thanks to a very kind couple from Fort Collins, she now has a permanent home!

Josie after 1 year at the Shelter, now Denkai Adoption Center

Josie is a 1.5 year old pit bull who has lived at the former K9 Bed and Biscuit Facility for the last year. She was having some serious issues at the kennel with tearing up clothing when we would work with her, but after a very short period of time and working with her, she has learned to harness her energy in positive ways!!! She has now been placed in this wonderful and permanent home! Josie is the white pit bull in the video!

Emily Finds a Home after Four Years of being homeless

Emily is a wonderful heeler mix dog who after living her life as a homeless shelter dog has found her place with Lloyd. he had been at the shelter (now Denkai Adoption Center) Since 2006. She has been adopted by Lloyd who loves her dearly! She couldn't be happier!

Horses, Mules, Donkeys Need Homes URGENT!!

After having more than 100 animals, dogs, cats, and rabbits removed from Little Bit o Love rescue and Sanctuary near Carpenter, WY by Wyoming Animal Control officers one week ago, the facility has decided to release 23 horses, donkeys, and mules to homes and other rescue groups.

When Jason and Lesa Totten first visited Denkai, they were new horse owners with little experience.

Through a lot of hands on work with Denkai volunteers, they have come a long way and are not only adopting two horses, Dream and Sylver (one of the 18 arabians), they are also working as a foster home for our one to three years olds. This has proven to be an excellent program and is aiding our organization in not only making these horses more adoptable, but helping to increase our adoption rate.

Supplies for this program are always needed in the form of halters, bridles, older saddles, and lead ropes.

Weanling Update

The Palomino Weanling is doing great, what a little spitfire! He is very obviously feeling much better these days after several doses of wormer and a lot of good feed, he has been running around and kicking up his heels on a daily basis. Now we are working on socializing him. He is going to be a fun challenge!

Pal is now in an excellent foster home with Scott and Patty. Whether they know it or not, Scott and Patty are giving him a second chance at life, one he would have never had otherwise. Pal's hernia is being monitored closely and Scott and Patty are doing everything they can to help in his recovery! Pictures will be coming soon!

Senior Horses Have Special Needs

Denkai Animal Sanctuary is home to five senior horses. Each of whom have special dietary needs that keep us busy tending to them every day! Below you will see each of their photos and read each of their heartbreaking stories.

Our work here is special and incredibly important to the happiness and welfare of these wonderful animals. Find out below how you can help them live their life out here at Denkai after a lifetime of service to people.

Our goal for all of these seniors since they are permanent residents here is to gain enough in-kind and cash contributions that will fence off a 50 acre area which is available now so that they may enjoy their stay. The emotional happiness in these animals is so important to us! Supplies needed include: 8' round posts, t-posts, smooth wire, wood for more shelters, a trencher to run a water line, hydrant for water, gates and lots of volunteers! Santana is a 28 year old Paso Fino Stallion. He was part of a neglect case in Jefferson county where he nearly starved to death. Thanks to the work of animal control officers and other individuals in the community, he is now safe at Denkai!

Jebediah is a 31 year old Mule. he was originally part of a dude ranch, then found a home with a wonderful couple. Due to health problems with his owner, they were no longer able to care for him.

Ponch and Fred are best friends at Denkai. They came to us last night because their owner passed from cancer recently. Ponch is 23 years old and Fred is 28. Ponch is an OTT Racehorse and Fred is an ex-therapy horse. Fred is pretty thin and is going to need a lot of extra care to get back on track, not to mention dental work as soon as possible.

Survivor, 33+ year old gelding. Survivor was part of the Miracle Horse Rescue with HSUS. He is doing very well still, has a lot of spunk is is just an amazing gentleman.

October 28, 2009 Blizzard

This was the scene early this morning as I walked out the door to begin feeding.
This video starts at the Chicken Coop, you will see a gray blob which is the horse trailer, next to that is the round pen, the collapsed loafing shed that never made the pen, with the horse corrals and pasture in the background and then ending at the red barn. All of this is about 75 yards from where I am standing at the house.

So far it has only gotten worse today. I had bedded animals in heavily and Ray placed large bales in all of the feeders for the horses before this storm hit in an effort to get ready for it.

The only downfall is that the loafing shed we had spent so much time building for the senior horses as shelter for this storm was not welded tightly to the skids so when I tried moving it to their pen, it came apart completely. I guess that is what comes from not having the equipment we need to get the job done the way it is supposed to be done. We had reused materials from an old building for this that now will be firewood instead. Talk about frustrating. We have decided that it is worth trying again to raise the funding for needed loafing shed materials and having it built with steel instead of wood..

You can see somewhat from this video the weather I am dealing with in caring for these animals on a daily basis and why it is so important to have an operational piece of equipment so that I can maneuver over these snow drifts to feed these animals that rely on me daily. I can't stress how important and valuable this is. A skid steer on tracks is definitely going to be the most versatile tool for us at this point. That machine would be able to travel over these snow drifts, dig the animals out, and would ensure that we do not fail these animals because of the winter blizzard conditions in that I can't get to them to feed.

Sanctuary Horses aid Youth in Crisis

Two of 18 Arabian Horses have found their calling in aiding youth in crisis. Bashkira, a 26 year old mare and Colby, a three year old gelding arrived at Reflections for Youth near Loveland, CO on October 20. The reaction from the youth was all we needed to know that this is going to be a successful program for both Denkai Animal Sanctuary and Reflections.

Not only are these youth learning about the horses, their backgrounds and the strife that the equine have been through, they have helped to build a fence, loafing shed and now have daily chores in feeding, watering, and caring for Bashkira and Colby.

Charlotte the Incredible!

Charlotte is now nearly one year old. She will be a full sized hog and grow to around 1000 lbs. Charlotte originally landed at the Larimer Humane Society in Fort Collins after running loose near Loveland, CO.

She loves to run, must be scratched daily and has the greatest personality! She still loves her visits to the senior horses and of course will drop everything for a belly rub.

New Arrivals Show the Callouness of our Society

We received an urgent call from one of our supporters regarding several weanling and yearling horses this past Wednesday who had been dumped off at Centennial Livestock Auction in Fort Collins. They needed a place to go.

This was a difficult decision for us, we are slammed with horses here and really could not fathom more coming in. Looking at these poor souls, the shape they are in and the fact that the two weanlings are around 2-3 months old and should never have been removed from their mothers at this age was enough to seal the deal. The only other choice these innocent babies would have been death thanks to the callousness of their previous owners.

Both of the weanlings here have some issues that will need attention immediately and again Denkai is asking for your help for the sake of these poor babies. The darker Chestnut foal has a very large hernia and has been a bit dehydrated, but otherwise seems pretty lively.

The palomino foal is in pretty rough shape. He has a very swollen rear hock, is limping on it a little, but does put weight on it. He is obviously very parasitic (worms) and in pretty poor health. He is very scared and obviously was not well cared for.

The two yearlings will recover pretty quickly. There are areas where their mane and fur have been rubbed off, looks to us like they were roped, there is a possibility that they were all used as roping dummies.

There are many special animals here at Denkai. More than 20 goats and sheep reside at our Sanctuary. Several of these are senior animals who have been with us over the last four years and several are young goats who have faced misfortune prior to entering Denkai.

The escape artists in the video are from the Peyton, CO area. Breeding became out of control and what started with merely a few goats turned into 9 very quickly. Their owner, no longer able to care for them had just stopped feeding them until rescue stepped in. Most all of these goats had very little if any handling and are still pretty wild to this day. They are very beautiful and without our facility would have had no place to go, they were and are not considered adoptable as a pet.

Goats at Denkai have free roam, but do have a penned area that gives them shelter and protection from predators.

Here's how you can help these wonderful goats:
1. Consider fostering or adoption. We only let goats go to homes as pets and do have several friendly goats here.

This past weekend was roaring busy with projects and visitors for Denkai Animal Sanctuary. Volunteer Darrin Hill led our fencing project at Reflections for Youth near Loveland, CO on Saturday. Together with Erich Phillips, Founder Jeff, Director Virgil, the house staff and especially the youth living at this facility this fencing project went up in a hurry!

The purpose of this project with Reflections is to bring in two horses that will be fostered at their facility and cared for with the help of Denkai’s and Reflections staff throughout the year. Phase two of this project will be in building a loafing shed. Contributions towards this project will be needed in the form of 12’ or 16’ 6x6” posts, 2x4’s and as much tin or sheeting as we can get. Bridging the Sanctuary/ Agricultural Industry Gap

At the Sanctuary we had a visit from some local square dancers who spent the day touring our area deciding to make Denkai a stop on their way. This was a demographic of mainly ranchers. They walked away from the Sanctuary with a positive image regarding our work, one which they did not come into the tour with. Unfortunately we are fighting an image that is common among most individuals in the agricultural industry regarding rescue groups.

I was asked many times what happens when an old horse that is seriously ill and has no chance of recovery comes to us if we just keep it alive and let it suffer and how do we dispose of these animals, how are we funded and my favorite, so can you legitimately say that no animal on your place is suffering. Great, obviously, they have come across a few not so legit organizations.

Whew, I had to wipe my brow after this group left. However, I was able to identify with them in many ways, especially when in came to harvesting crops and the hard work that goes into that. I was able to communicate to them the fact that we have a good relationship with area ranchers and farmers, are actually working together and able to help them through several means.

Through all of our farming activities, showing that we are responsible in caring for the animals at our facility, working side by side with farmers and ranchers, and having a business/marketing plan, Denkai is bridging the gap between the Sanctuary and Agricultural industries.

On a portion of our 640 acres, we have been growing wheat which is then sold as a commodity and helps to bring in funding towards our operating expenses. This year, the crop has come in amazingly thick and with extraordinary heads. We will be getting ready to harvest this crop in the next two weeks.

HSUS Provides Emergency Funding for Grover Cats

Due to a recent Panleukopenia (feline distemper) outbreak in the cats of Grover, CO. Denkai was able to secure funding for much needed vaccinations through the HSUS Annie Lee Roberts Emergency Grant. This clinic was successful and held on July 18 in town. We had posted flyers advertising this clinic, which is the best way to communicate with the community in Grover.

Not only did our veterinarian Dr. Michael Suit offer his services to this clinic at a very reduced rate, he offered health exams and vaccinations for owned cats and dogs at a rate of $30.00. The kicker? Nobody showed up. People in Grover can not even afford a minimal $30.00 health exam for their pets. At least this is what we were told. So, we offered it for free and managed to get animals taken care of. We knocked on doors and ran animals back and forth from the clinic. Some of these pets had not seen a vet in around 5 years.

We have a little more time to work through this grant and will put the rest of the funding toward spay/neuter services for the feral cats in need. Thank you HSUS for helping us to provide a very needed service to an incredibly under served area.

Rescued Rabbits Desperately Need Homes!

Rescued Rabbits from Cheyenne, WY are still in need of forever and foster homes. There are still more than 70 rabbits needing to be placed. These bunnies are very well socialized and have been handled on a regular basis.

This rescue lasted until Midnight, pulling, logging, sexing and sorting rabbits.
Little Bit of Love Rescue of Wyoming has been caring for these bunnies along with help, running them to their medical appointments and keeping the ball rolling on this rescue.

Over 100 Pet Rabbits Need Help Immediately!

Denkai Animal Sanctuary

Cheyenne, WY - Today we were called in to a situation in which more than 100 pet rabbits and counting are in desperate need. These rabbits have been bred and used for their fur. The owner brushes them on a regular basis to gather their excess and shedding fur in order to weave with it.

What started with a few rabbits and a hobby is now seriously out of control. Once again, animals are suffering at the hands of human callousness. This individual is losing her home due to foreclosure. These rabbits are currently being housed in her garage and will have two options: 1. To be rescued in a joint effort by Denkai and other rescue groups in which they will be spayed and neutered and placed in homes or 2. To be euthanized by the local shelter. Since these rabbits are being housed in the county, we have the opportunity to help save them. They are all handled daily by a 7 year old girl and would be wonderful pets for and educated family.

We expect all females of reproducing age to be pregnant as the males and females have not been separated and expect that what is now 100 rabbits will easily turn to several hundred or many more in a very short time if we do not act right away.

A Wyoming Sanctuary will be temporarily housing these rabbits while we work to seek out other rescues, sanctuaries and individuals able to assist in taking in or fostering these bunnies. A joint effort in getting these bunnies to safety will begin this week.

Funding in the amount of $7,500 for spay and neuter costs. This number will most likely mount daily.

Tuff sheds or another steel building would be really ideal. If you know of anybody who would be willing to purchase this item or contribute toward it, it is a desperate need.

Survivor, the Miracle Horse

This video is of Survivor, we believe his age to be close to 30. Survivor was one of 33 horses rescued together with the Humane Society of the United States in April of 2007 when the Dekalb, Ill. Slaughter plant was closed.

We believe that Survivor is a Tennessee Walker. He is very well trained and extremely fun to ride. Survivor desperately needs a sponsor or even a foster home. He is easy to catch, good for the farrier, extremely friendly, loves to be brushed and would be great for a beginner rider who wanted to go on that occasional stress relieving ride.

Bubba The Haflinger

Bubba is an 8 year old Haflinger of whom our Founder felt a strong pull to rescue. He was off loaded at the local Fort Collins sale barn and we were told by the owner that he was given to him, trained to drive and ride, and he no longer wanted this horse, so he brought Bubba to the sale barn thinking he would bring a good meat price because he is so fat.

Seriously?????

So needless to say, a full day of harassment by sale barn staff did not bring our founder to her knees, she stayed, bid on Bubba and brought him home.

Elijah, our 17 year old trainer from Fort Collins is in the below video riding Bubba, you will see his one quirk which has gotten much better as we ride him more. After this workout, the sanctuary's workers and founder went for a 3 mile ride with Bubba and others. He did great, we truly think he will make a great beginner/kids horse.

Little Billy Goat Gruff

We were contacted by the Larimer Humane Society Wild Kind Department regarding a young goat that had come to their facility and had little handling. This goat, being a bit shy of people and very un-trusting, would fling itself into fences trying to get away. They were out of options. We arrived this past week to pick up Little Billy and found a very scared baby boer goat. These goats are bred for their meat. After a certain weight they will be sent to slaughter. A lot of the 4-H kids show them at fair as well.

After closely examining Billy, we found that this little baby is a hermaphrodite. Meaning that male and female sex organs are both present. So Little Billy will never work for a breeding program because he/she is more than likely sterile.

Little Billy will more than likely live a long life here at the Sanctuary unless that special adopter comes along.

Where Does all that Manure Go??

As you can imagine, we have more than our fair share of horse manure, old straw, shavings and more. The animals put out more than 100 tons of manure over the last 12 months.

So, how do we deal with it? Well we have two ways, one is in the following video, spreading it on our crops, the other, selling it to kind folks such as yourselves, farmers that are farming organically and anybody else that wants a good quality compost. This helps to bring in program funding for the Sanctuary and aligns with our mission to become completely sustainable.

Thank you to Ray Reichley for the use of his time and equipment in hauling and spreading this on the fields. As you can tell, we are going to be in need of equipment in order to further this project for the Sanctuary, we were fortunate to have Ray's help this time.

Housing Options available for Sanctuary!

Reflections for Youth has made us an offer can not refuse! As you may be aware, our facilities at Denkai are very limited regarding office space and options for housing workers and visitors. Thanks to Reflections for Youth, (www.reflectionsforyouth.org) a not for profit organization located in the Loveland/Berthoud, CO area, our option for additional housing is now a reality.

Denkai has the opportunity to purchase two modular classroom buildings that are completely plumbed, have furnaces and water heaters on board, electric is already wired and they have never been used. These will work very well for housing. Denkai is working on permits needed and other necessary paperwork that will allow installation of these buildings at the Sanctuary and would provide much needed facilities for workers, volunteers and visitors.

We need your help to accomplish this. We can purchase both of these buildings for $1,000, normal cost would be $10,000 per unit. We have a hauler that is going to help us at cost, estimated at $2,000, again normally we would have had to pay close to $20,000 to move these buildings.

Spring Snow Drifts In Sanctuary!

Denkai Animal Sanctuary was hit hard last night by spring snow storms. Founder Floss Blackburn along with Johnna Hayes and April spent hours digging animals out by hand. The largest project was Charles, the Sanctuary's 900 lb boar pig. He has been nicknamed pigosaurus due to his enormous size. Needless to say he and his shelter were buried under six foot snowdrifts. So it took three women two hours to dig him out. First came a snout and a snort, then came his head and then we all ran like our rear ends were on fire when he finally came tearing out of his hut.

It is vital to Denkai's operations to have a skid steer or larger loader on hand for storms like this. The north horse pens were literally drifted full of 6' snow drifts. The animals that normally reside in those pens had to be moved to other areas of the Sanctuary. The little tractor that was so generously contributed unfortunately is not built for this job and has a cracked frame.

The Sanctuary houses three dogs that are dog aggressive. Rose's pen snowed shut, so she had to be moved, she has an insulated dog house with heated bedding. Denkai is seeking funds that would go towards building a badly needed facility for the dogs. When the weather is wicked like this, all eight dogs have to be moved and kept separate in the Sanctuary's 600 square foot house. YIKES!

Hi Floss! It's been two years since I adopted my little Maggie (she was DeeDee at DenKai). A lot has happened. She and I were doing just fine and she was my little lover girl. Always sweet and cuddly...very much the baby and happy she didn't have to share my affection.

Well a little over a year ago I ended up having to take my niece's infant in as a Foster child when he was taken away from a Meth house. I had never been a mother and didn't know what to do. I worried Maggie would not adjust to it either. However, because she had been a mommy in her previous home, she knew exactly what to do. Instead of being jealous of the attention I gave Austin, she became his best buddy and adopted him. Those first nights he was here and he would cry, she would run to him and snuggle him and kiss him and just lay beside him. They have a tight bond as you can see in the attached picture.

So, I just wanted to tell you once again how thankful I am for the sweet girl you rescued for me. She is happy in her forever home and loves her family. I wish you and DenKai nothing but blessings in the wonderful work you do.

New Sanctuary Arrivals

Prince, 12 ducks and 1 goose:
Jerre Fisher, an amazing rescuer, mother and wife most recently passed away after losing her battle with cancer. Jerre had an enormous heart and many rescued animals, most all of which her family was able to place. A few of the very special have come to reside at our Sanctuary. Their story follows;
Never have I had such a group of animals come in with so much spirit in them.

Jerre’s animals most definitely carry her within them. This was obvious the minute I saw them. Twelve ducks and one goose, all reside together at our Sanctuary now and as I observed these animals after placing them in their yard, I began to realize just how special they really are; They all carry scars like Jerre did of injuries past that they mostly healed from.

The goose had a broken wing and leg that are now long healed, this goose has a very kind eye, there are a couple of the ducks that have had broken legs and still get around just fine with the flock thanks to Jerre saving them.

Prince is Jerre’s 34 year old appaloosa gelding who came to Denkai with a very special diet. Prince has no teeth so is on senior feed, beet pulp and several other supplements to keep his health up. Never have I ever experienced a horse this angry and hurt. For the first two days here, Prince refused to eat, after all he had been removed from the only place he had called home for about 10 years, what was this strange place and where was his mom; The woman that used to feed him every day by hand and pet him while he ate?

About day three Prince had had it with me, he was ticked off and letting me know about it. I walked into his pen to feed him his grain and he came at me with ears pinned and eyes bloodshot. I figured, ok, he either eats or he bites me. Well he went to the bucket of food as I was holding it and ate. I cried hard and began to pet him, his ears went forward as through my tears I told him that I was so incredibly sorry he had lost his mother and that she missed him so badly and wanted him to be ok. The anger in his eyes began to disappear and just like that we had made headway. I stood there that day petting him, crying and talking to him for an hour while he ate. Since then, Prince has been a little bit better about eating on his own, but always welcomes the company of Sweet Pea. Volunteers are needed for Prince to give him the one on one attention he deserves and has grown used to. Jerre Fisher Memorial Fund

Jerre Fisher:

Greeley, CO - Jerre Fisher is one of the most amazing individuals that I have come across since founding Denkai Animal Sanctuary. Aside of caring for her own wonderful bunch of animals, Jerre reached above and beyond the call of duty for Denkai's Sanctuary animals and most recently the arabian horses in need.

On February 20, 2009 Jerre lost a very long battle with Cancer and still in those moments prior to her passing strongly advocated that her animal companions be taken care of.

In Memory of Jerre Fisher; Denkai has Established the Jerre Fisher Memorial Fund to carry on her heartfelt work on behalf of animals in need.

Contributions toward this fund will help to establish a much needed veterinary facility at Denkai Animal Sanctuary and will help to provide emergency care to homeless animals who would otherwise perish.

Jerre Lee Fisher, loving grandmother, mother and wife, passed away Feb. 20, 2009, at Hospice and Palliative Care of Northern Colorado after a long and brave battle with breast cancer.

She was born Aug. 4, 1936, in Long Beach, Calif., to Arthur and Florence (Chamberlain) Frederiksen. She grew up in Greeley and graduated from Greeley High in 1954, excelling in band as majorette, Pep Club, athletics and a member of National Honor Society. In 1965, she married Charles Largent. They later divorced but remained good friends. She married Errol Fisher in 1998. Jerre retired from the State of Colorado 19th Judicial District in 1998 after 29 years.

She loved taking care of her many animals, especially her inseparable chemo companion yorkie, Amazing Grace. She lived and loved life to the fullest and enjoyed Dixieland and Queen City Jazz, cruising to Alaska and the Caribbean and Harley trips to California Highway 1 with her husband, Errol and her brother, Doug. Jerre was past director of the Weld County Humane Society and was instrumental in the early development of the organization as a safe and humane shelter for homeless animals. She was a member of the Greeley/Evans Moose Lodge No. 909, a longtime member of the Greeley Harley Owners Group No. 1462 and editor of the H.O.G. Herald newsletter. She was an avid supporter of many needy groups, including Denkai Animal Sanctuary, American Humane Association, Triangle Cross Ranch and Relay for Life. In her spare time, she crocheted dozens of baby blankets and hats and donated them to the Monfort Birthing Center at N.C.M.C. Jerre enjoyed sharing her many artistic and creative talents, including sewing, drawing, calligraphy and flower gardening.

Jerre is survived by her husband, Errol; two daughters, Lynn Largent and Lauris (Brad) Laue, all of Greeley; a stepdaughter, Kelly (Scott) Wheeler of Dallas, Texas; five stepsons, Mike of Dallas, Tom, Steve and Rick of Greeley and Mark of Denver. She loved and will be dearly missed by her 15 grandchildren, Mark, Mitch, Lauren, Sarah, Jeff, Tyler, Ronnie, Demi, Nick, Jake, Derek, Josh, Atienne, Tony and Nate.

She was preceded in death by her son, Scott Largent; her brother, Doug; and her parents.

Rosie is perhaps the most precious little girl many of us have ever known. Her story is nothing short of miraculous, so similar to those you may view on Animal Cops.

Rosie is a 4 year old Chihuahua, she grew up at a local Fort Collins Dairy in a home with many people and children whom she absolutely adored. Rosie would anxiously wait for the School bus every day looking for the children and following them home. Rosie's life was no cake walk. She resided under the trailer house with her own family of dogs.

One day all of this changed for Rosie, she was running along her merry way as she did every day when she was run over by a truck. Rosie, in an enormous amount of pain was placed by her owners on their front porch step next to a filthy jacket and a dead starling that the cat had brought as an offering. The weather was below freezing that day. She lay for two days, in shock and freezing on the front porch of this run down house with her frozen bowl of milk next to her. Her pain was unbearable.

A kind woman came to Rosie's rescue after two days had gone by. Dawn from Fort Collins saw this poor little girl and immediately came to her rescue. Dawn was able to gain ownership of Rosie and set to calling every rescue group she could find asking for help for this little girl. Dawn had x-rays done and discovered that Rosie needed an orthopedic surgeon immediately. Dawn Contact Denkai Animal Sanctuary, we were happy to send out an e-mail requesting help.

Lori Montano brought her down to Downtown Animal Clinic here in Denver, were Dr. Umlauf, the premier orthopedic veterinary surgeon in Colorado, performed the necessary surgery to fix her several injuries.

There were, I believe, four fractures to repair, including one of her acetabulum/femoral head area. There were no dislocations, so there shouldn't be a problem in the future with aseptic necrosis of the femoral head often caused if this kind of injury is not repaired quickly.

Dr. Umlauf donated all of his time to perform the surgery, and more importantly paid the clinic to use the surgical suite and the facilities for her subsequent recovery out of his own pocket. If there is any way donations for this pup could be used to pay some of the vet clinic expenses, it would it be much appreciated.

Thank you all for all of your concern and help with this sweet girl. She wins the hearts of everyone with whom she comes in contact and I am so glad she will have a caring and responsible home to go to. In particular, thanks to Dawn who showed the concern in the first place to rescue this pup from her former owners who left her to languish in pain, and who continues to check in with Lori every day to find out how she's doing. Thanks to Floss Blackburn of Denkai Sanctuary who sent out the appeal. Thanks to Lori Montano who contacted the surgeon after I forwarded Floss' email to her. Thanks to Dr. Emily for keeping in touch with the surgeon to get regular updates that I can pass along to all concerned. Thanks to Bob for giving this sweet pup a home when she's ready to leave the clinic. Thanks to Dr. McManus and Mary and all the staff at the Downtown Animal Clinic for their time and care and concern for this pup. And a very special thanks to Dr. Ed Umlauf who performed the surgeries on this sweet angel pup out of his own pocket.

And most importantly, thank you to Bob Grube, Vice President for Denkai Animal Sanctuary for giving Rosie the best home she could have ever hoped for!

MAKE A CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTION – TAKE YOUR CHOICE AND
BE A BLESSING TO SOMEONE DURING THIS HOLIDAY SEASON:
• GIVE MONEY
You can use your credit card as long as the date processed is in 2008 (even if you don’t pay until January or even later). Or mail checks early because the charity may process your contribution on the date received rather than the date of post mark. For a gift over $250 at one time – you MUST get a receipt!!!! Your cancelled check is not good enough.

To give on line, simply go to your favorite charity’s web site –almost all allow you to make a contribution on line with a credit card. Otherwise, try www.guidestar.com .

For your friend who has everything, make a contribution in his/her name to his/her favorite charity. It is deductible to YOU.

• CLEAN OUT CLOSETS, GARAGE, KITCHEN AND MAKE A
CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTION OF NONCASH GOODS TO
GOODWILL OR ARC OR DISABLED VETERANS ETC ETC.
To assure that your contribution is deductible – DOCUMENT it.
Take photos, make a list of items along with their original purchase price and their current thrift store value. BE REALISTIC. You can use www.itsdeductible.com as a guide, but remember that the IRS does NOT sanction that web site’s valuations. You are now required to have receipts to prove the purchase price. Just be aware of that. Get a signed and dated
receipt if your gift exceeds $250 per trip. Be sure to give us your lists to use in preparation of your tax return.

• GO SHOPPING
Pick up an “angel” ornament in almost any store or mall and buy a gift for someone who really needs a smile. Keep the receipt – it is deductible.

• CONSIDER GIVING AWAY THAT OLD CLUNKER CAR (OR BOAT OR TRAILER OR TIMESHARE OR…OTHER BIG THING).
If you give a car to charity before the end of the year, you could get a big deduction. Here are the rules, briefly. If the charity sells the car at auction, your deduction is the amount the car sold for and the charity will supply you (and the IRS)
with a 1099. If the charity will use the car in its mission or gift the car to a needy person, you will get a fair market value deduction and the charity will give you a letter indicating that it will indeed make use of the car itself. Big difference. Shop
around to find a charity that can use your car. If it isn’t running, how about a school for mechanics?? ☺

• VOLUNTEER MILEAGE IS DEDUCTIBLE!
If you drive your car to do volunteer work…your mileage is deductible. Pull together your log showing date, reason, and miles. Don’t overlook this deduction! If you drive thousands of miles, have the organization give you a letter thanking you for
driving A LOT (have them use your specific amount from your well maintained log). For 2008, the deduction is 14 cents per mile – which doesn’t sound like much, but if you drive 1,000 miles (a mere 20 miles a week) driving seniors to doctor appointments (for example), you will have a $140 deduction.

• GIVE WITHOUT GIVING A CENT
For a nondeductible, but ongoing gift, to your favorite charity, look at www.goodsearch.com. Goodsearch will give money to your charity EVERY TIME you do an on line search through Goodsearch. It works! Try it!

Daisy's Surgery A Success!

After only two weeks of waiting and fund raising, Daisy, the three year old rottweiler who survived the California Wildfires last fall has successfully undergone her TPLO surgery and is recovering nicely in her foster home.

A huge thank you goes out to Dr. Kerrihard, Kristin Des Marais, Colorado's Helping Hands Foundation, and our many caring and supportive individual contributors. Together with your help, $1,500.00 was raised!

Daisy was at her wit's end trying to walk on her ailing leg. You cared and came to her rescue. Thank you!

Meet The Fonz!
This 300lb goat roamed the streets of Fort Collins for about two weeks creating a flood of calls to the Larimer Humane Society. They were unable to apprehend this large escapee, so it was Denkai to the rescue! Fonzie has a very happy go lucky personality and has quickly become a favorite here at the Sanctuary!

Meet Babs!
Babs is one of our senior residents here at the Sanctuary. She was taken in when another farmed animal Sanctuary closed its doors. Babs resides here along with two other ewes all are near 14 years of age!

Say Hello to My Little Friend! Chico is a polish rooster. He was one of many purchased at a feed store and since he did not turn out a hen, he was unwanted. Chico is very sweet, loves to roost on his little house and would love to meet his sponsor this holiday season!

Charlotte!

Charlotte is brand new to our Sanctuary. She was picked up as a stray in the streets of Loveland by Larimer Humane Society. They quickly discovered her escapee potential after chasing her a few times and when nobody claimed her, she was passed on to our Sanctuary. This little lady is around a year old and has a lot of growing to do! This is one pig that will never see a holiday dinner from the plate! She will live her life out here at our Sanctuary! We would like to thank Cache La Poudre Feeds in Fort Collins for supplying her with plenty of feed for the next few weeks!

Sweet Pea!

Sweet Pea is a favorite to anybody who has visited Denkai Animal Sanctuary.
She was the victim of severe neglect which left her crippled, but still able to walk. We have maintained her for the last few years and are finding that she now needs a cart to help ease the strain on her front legs, shoulders and her back. Max the Potbellied Pig finds a home!

I had the pleasure of driving Max the potbellied pig who came to our Sanctuary from Denver Dumb Friends League to his new home in Grand Junction, CO with Lynn and her furry family of birds, dogs and horses. Lynn does and incredible job maintaining and caring for her animals and Max fit right in.

Upon arrival, Lynn had a nice comfy futon bed with blankets ready for Max who has his very own room. He contentedly allowed Lynn to give him a much needed belly rub, gently closed his eyes and even smiled! He wasted no time in settling in, curling up, pulling his new blankie over him and taking a nap.

He met new doggie friends, two older Dobermans, very kind and gentle along with two bird friends, both macaws. He walked on his leash like a pro when Lynn took him out for bathroom duty too.

We would like to thank Lisa for finding Lynn and introducing us to her and Lynn for taking Max in after losing her potbellied pig of 16 years.

It flows from the actual round up with helicopters to Tripping rodeos (mustangs are roped by the leg and brought down) to bucking strings and then to the slaughter plant. Dakota is a 7 year old Mustang Gelding. He was dropped at a local kill sale before being rescued. He has a bad stifle on his hind leg, but is not terribly lame. Dakota is handleable and would love a visit from a special sponsor

Hope (R) and Faith (L) are two 11 year old mustang mares originally from a New Mexico Herd. They were adopted out by the BLM and used for breeding until the adopter decided that she no longer wanted to care for them and was going to shoot these two mares with two 5 day old babies at their sides. Another failed adoption by the BLM.

Liberty is now 12 years old. He was rounded up at the age of 7 by the BLM from a Nevada mustang herd. Liberty was then adopted by a Fort Collins area dude ranch that planned to use him as a trail horse with no previous training. When this backfired the owner ran Liberty through a local kill sale. Liberty has been safe with our Sanctuary for the last 5 years.

Cutter is a 5 year old mustang gelding. He has had no handling other than round up, branding and castration by the BLM. We do not have his complete history and he has a ton of potential for training still. Cutter has a long way to go in trusting people.

First Snow, Winter Needs!

This is a video of our first snow last night. This is a very minor glimpse into what we are in for this winter here at the Sanctuary. We still need your help to stockpile feed for the animals and in getting functional equipment. The areas that you see drifting in this video will be 5 times that size when winter really does hit and we need your help to be prepared.

Items needed include:

60 more tons of hay. We have access to this, we need help gaining the funding in the amount of $7,000 to accomplish this. We are able to get this hay hauled into us from South Dakota for $120 per ton including delivery. To buy locally, the cost would be $180 to $200 or more per ton, that doesn't include delivery. We save a lot of money this way and your contribution stretches farther. Hay is our largest and most urgent need.

2 Pit bulls Scheduled for Execution Need Help!

Urgent! Two very sweet black and white male pitbulls are awaiting their
execution in Gunnison, CO. These two, one year old pit bulls are set to be
executed for killing a rabbit. The county they are located in is not
pitbull friendly and would rather kill these two dogs than give them
another chance.

They did not attack a person, they have never threatened a child or any
other animals and they are absolute lovers.

You can help. In order to save them,they need to be transfered out of the
county that they are in. These two boys will need to be neutered.

1. Does anybody have room to take one or both of them in?

2. Can anybody help to sponsor them in order to cover transport costs,
neutering, vaccinations (we assume they are not up to date, but will know
more), and possible boarding costs if we can not find a home or rescue
facility that has openings? Cost would be around $400 per dog. Any amount
will help with them though.

These dogs only have two more days until they are executed. Please contact

Cortez Yearlings Finally Home!

Thanks to a very generous transporter, the Yearling horses rescued from an Ignacio Kill Buyer are now safe at Denkai Animal Sanctuary in Grover, CO. These little babies have remained healthy other than a few snotty noses and are doing very well. We will be looking for homes for these horses and will begin basic ground training with them in the next week or so. These are some photos of the Cortez Yearlings. More to come. We are planning to move them to their temporary Cortez facility tomorrow. We ordered vaccinations from Mountain Veterinary Supply in Fort Collins, they are half the price of vaccinations here, so will accomplish that tomorrow along with de-worming.

Keep in mind these babies will need recovery time along with lots of food and TLC, they are kind of beat up and look a little scraggly right now. This is all part of the rescue process.

On October 5th a transport loaded with 2 horses and 2 donkeys headed for Cortez, CO from the Sanctuary's home in Grover, CO. At 1:00 in the morning on Monday while driving down Hwy 285, the engine quit. We coasted to the side of the road and waited more than an hour for a tow truck, cost: $505.00.

We were towed to Alamosa, CO where the trailer was dropped in an empty lot at 3:00 in the morning, just across from the Ford Dealership, where the truck was dropped off and across from our motel room. At the break of dawn, we unloaded horses, packed them with food and water and started making phone calls to find anybody that would allow us to house the horses in Alamosa until the diagnosis would come in on the truck. Thanks to one of our Board Members, Bob Grube, we made contact with Johnie Payne, who kindly hooked up to our horse trailer, helped us load the animals and towed it to his home, where corrals were ready for the horses. That was a huge load off.

The diagnosis on the truck was in: The valve had dropped and destroyed the piston. Our options were to replace the engine for a cost of $5,500.00 or leave it in Alamosa until we could come get it and tow it back to the Sanctuary. We chose to leave it and Johnie gave us a place to store it.

Our Cortez Contact sent her friends to come get the horses and us in Alamosa. They showed up Monday afternoon, we loaded horses and the trailer and headed for Cortez. Wolf Creek Pass was not an option because of Ice and our lack of trailer breaks, so we arrived in Cortez at 3:00 this morning. The Horses are safe and happy, the yearlings will be moved to safety tomorrow until we can find a way to get them back to the Sanctuary in Grover, CO.

Here is how you can help:

Option A: we can raise another $1,000 to hire a transporter to come get these yearlings and bring them to the Sanctuary.

Option B: You can help us to get a truck donated or the use of a reliable truck donated to drive these horses back to Grover, We'll pay fuel costs.

Option C: We have a person willing to transport the yearlings to Saguche in 2 weeks if we can meet somebody with a truck that has a gooseneck hitch and pass off the trailer and our Director with 2 dogs.

5 Yearling Horses In Need on Cortez Kill Lot!

Five Yearling horses are currently sitting on a kill lot in Cortez,
Colorado awaiting their fate in a Mexican Slaughter Plant. These innocent
babies are the result of backyard breeders and have become a byproduct of a
falling economy along with irresponsible owners.

Denkai Animal Sanctuary is asking not only for your help in ransoming these
babies and saving their lives but in finding them lasting homes where they
will never face such a horrifying death again. A ransom has been placed of
$90.00 for each of these five babies, $450.00 total to get them to freedom.
The youngsters would normally bring him .40 per lb at a Mexican Slaughter

If we are able to raise this funding, we are also looking for individuals
and other rescue organizations to place these babies in. If none can be
found, we will be sending some of our rideable and trained horses to

The absolute latest date for ransom is Saturday, October 4, 2008. We plan
to have a transport pick these babies up October 11, 2008 in Cortez. Any
contributions towards fuel cards/gas money would be greatly appreciated as
well. Fuel costs are estimated at $400.00.

Parker, CO Resident Initiates Monthly Giving Challenge For The Animals!

In lieu of the recent press releases regarding eighteen Arabian horses
displaced due to a horrific divorce (http://denkaisanctuary.blogspot.com/),
Parker Resident Kathy Zaffore has issued a Monthly Giving Challenge for
donors. Her letter follows below;

Dear Fellow Supporters of Denkai Animal Sanctuary,

I received an email from Floss a couple of days ago addressed to all of us
who are concerned and active at some level with Denkai. She outlined the
current financial struggles and asked for our time and dollars to meet the
immediate needs for not only the creatures large and small who call Denkai
home, but also for other animals in need who have found a way to reach out
to Floss and Denkai â and therefore all of us â for help.

Let me say here that I have never met Floss, nor have I visited Denkai.
Nor did Floss ask me to do this letter. It is simply my response to her
appeal.

I live south of Denver and care for my own menagerie â a dog, cats,
horses, and the many wild critters who drop by for help now and then. I
learned about Denkai about a year ago through news articles and I contacted
Denkai for more information. I made an initial contribution and was amazed
at what happened. Floss worked hard to keep me involved. She informed me
several times a week about the activities at Denkai. She invited me to
participate at many different levels. She included me in campaigns to save
not only the lives at Denkai but those in many other communities, too. She
engaged me in a way that few CEOs of organizations do (and as a CPA, I have
worked with a lot of organizations). It was both responsible and
responsive, and demonstrated her desire to not only pay the bills, but to
sustain her organization for the long haul. If you do not know â THAT IS
RARE. A lot of people care about animals, and many start what they cannot
finish. Few stand up to the day in and day out demand of operating and
SUSTAINING a thriving sanctuary. It is a lot of work â caring for
animals AND raising the buckets of money that makes it all possible. Two
more-than-full-time jobs. And she is apparently doing both exceptionally
well.

She won me over with her business-like approach, which encouraged me to
give more. And then a few months ago, I chose to include Denkai in my
AUTOMATIC MONTHLY GIVING plan. Automatic monthly giving does a few
important things:
â¢ The organization, in this case Denkai, knows
how much it can count on each month for its
operational expenses â THIS IS BOTH
ENCOURAGING AND CRITICAL
â¢ Because you are giving automatically by credit
card, you DO NOT FORGET to give even when you
are on vacation (the critters do not take a
vacation)
â¢ Your giving will appear on your credit card
statement each month which provides an
acceptable receipt for the Internal Revenue
Service (unless you give $250 or more! And if
you do that, Floss will happily jot you a
personal receipt, I am sure!)
â¢ You will stick to your plan and accomplish
your giving goal each year while providing
vital funding to an organization you love.

Today, if you are not already giving regularly in some capacity, I would
like to challenge you start an automatic giving program on behalf of
Denkai. Here is how it works:

Go to www.denkaisanctuary.org and click on Donate Now at the top left
corner of the home page. You will end up on Network for Good. Follow the
instructions and sign up to give the same amount every month - $10, $20 or
more. Add a dollar or two to defray the expense of credit card donations.
That is all you do. Simple! And so incredibly effective. Your monthly
commitment will encourage Floss to continue with the work she is doing on
behalf of animals for all of us.

One last note â I am not a wealthy person, but I believe in supporting
animal causes and well-run local organizations. My current gift is $100
per month (plus a few defraying bucks). I am prepared to add $1 to my
monthly gift for the first 25 people who sign up to automatically give $50
or more per month for at least one year. I will count on Floss to let me
know, and perhaps add the challenge to her blog.

Larimer and Weld County Hay Growers Come through for Homeless Horses at Denkai Animal Sanctuary

EIGHTEEN HORSES FROM DRY CREEK ARABIAN’S NIWOT, CO FACILITY UP A CREEK

Grover/Niwot, CO-- Rulings by the Supreme Court have recently shut down horse slaughter plants in the United States. For many this was an enormous victory. Horses are dumped weekly at our local sale barns by dude ranches, breeders, and other individual owners that are totally clueless to the fact that their well trained horse is destined to end up in the hands of a kill buyer and headed to a Mexican or Canadian slaughter plant, a fate worse than death.

For eighteen Arabian and Arabian Cross horses this fate has been delayed over the last ten months. They are now staring it in the face. Colorado law states that livestock are considered property, not a pet animal, therefore these horses are considered property and are treated as such in the judicial system. This law is flawed, though horses are not necessarily pet animals, they are not inanimate objects to be simply auctioned off either.

These horses have been the victims of a horrifying divorce between Mr. and Mrs. Helmick. They are caught up in a nightmare of he says, she says and their only options are to die or have a ruling handing them over to Denkai Animal Sanctuary in hopes of finding a home.

Denkai Animal Sanctuary has been housing these eighteen Arabian and Arabian cross horses since Novemeber of 2007. These horses were brought to the Sanctuary in poor condition from Marcy Trescott-Helmick’s Dry Creek Arabian facility in Niwot, CO. Marcy Trescott is the Owner of Dry Creek Arabians and plead guilty to two counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals in December of 2007. Since May of 2008, payments towards the care of these horses have ceased. Denkai Animal Sanctuary with the help of Horses Forever in Hygiene, CO has had hay, farrier work, vaccinations, and veterinary care donated towards these innocent beings. Resources have run dry, without public help, there is nothing left to care for these horses.

Denkai Animal Sanctuary has placed a lien against these horses and is working to get a hearing in court to take possession of them in order to bypass the “norm”. The normal process that happens since horses are considered property once a lien is placed provides that these horses would have to be sold at auction. This means that they would be purchased at auction most likely by kill buyers who would then ship them to a Mexican or Canadian Slaughter plant. After almost a year of rehabilitation, Denkai can not fathom such a fate for these horses. The Sanctuary has worked with local veterinarians in beating cancer, providing needed dental work, de-worming and putting more than 100 lbs on each of these horses, just for them to go to slaughter? We don’t think so!

Denkai Animal Sanctuary is asking for help from the public to save these horses and show that there is another option rather than public auction for such animals. These are not vehicles, houses, or material items! They are living, breathing beings. They have feelings; they can become frightened, sad, and happy. How is that we have reduced horses to the likes of an inanimate object?

The need for help is GREAT and URGENT! Please make a contribution to the Sanctuary; Denkai desperately needs hay, the horses each 10 tons per month. The Sanctuary has located good quality grass hay for $70.00 per ton to help feed these horses and needs to raise a total of $1,400.00 to bring in 20 tons which will help to feed these horses for two months. By this time, a court ruling should have been made and these horses should be seeking homes. This is our greatest need while the lives of these horses hang in the balance. Teens working hard at the Sanctuary

Elijah and his friend Jamie both from Fort Collins and in High School spent a large portion of their summer helping the Sanctuary. Both of these hard working teens are eligible for our Presidential Service Award. Elijah has spent more than 6000 hours volunteering with the Sanctuary since 2004 and Jamie has spent more than 50 hours helping out.

After a couple of long days hanging drywall in relentless rainstorms, these boys decided to make the best of it and take a spin in the go cart through a few very large "ponds" in the driveway. The end result? It's always good to have a little fun!

House Leader Opposes Proposal to Euthanize Wild Horses

A House leader has come out against a federal proposal to euthanize wild horses and asked a federal agency to delay a decision on the animals' fate.

Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W.Va., chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, urged the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to refrain from action until after the scheduled September release of a General Accountability Office report on the agency's management of wild horses.

The BLM's National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board in September is scheduled to consider alternatives to deal with horses' surplus numbers, including the euthanasia proposal.

Agency officials have said they're faced with tough choices because wild horses have overpopulated public lands in the West and they no longer can afford to care for the number of animals that have been rounded up.

"The BLM can, and should, do a better job with its entire wild horse and burro program, and should wait for the GAO to come forth with its report this fall before moving forward with a decision that will have a permanent effect on the lives of these creatures," Rahall said.

The agency, which had hoped to reach a decision by Sept. 30, now has no exact time table for one, spokeswoman Celia Boddington said Friday.

"We won't make a decision until we've discussed this issue fully with Chairman Rahall and humane groups," Boddington said. "We clearly want to take all our stakeholders' concerns into consideration."

The agency is considering different options such as efforts to step up birth control, but has not made any decisions yet, she added.

The 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act gives the agency the authority to euthanize and sell wild horses if necessary.

"It is a sad state of affairs when we have to fight to prevent the possible euthanasia of thousands of American horses," Rahall said. "We have a responsibility to preserve these icons of the American West for future generations."

But ranchers have said euthanasia might be necessary to keep horse numbers in check. Ranchers view the horses as competition for forage on the range.

"These are not easy choices," Boddington said. "The fact remains Congress authorized us to manage healthy herds on healthy rangelands. We're now looking to choices afforded us by current law."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., thinks the GAO report will show that the BLM has not done "a particularly effective job" when it comes to managing wild horses, spokesman Jon Summers said.

"Further, he believes the agency could do a much better job with its adoption program," Summers said, adding Reid also supports birth control as a way to control horse numbers.

There are an estimated 33,000 wild horses in 10 Western states. About half of those are in Nevada.

The agency has set a target "appropriate management level" of horses at 27,000. About another 30,000 horses are in holding facilities, where most are made available for adoption.

Last year about $22 million of the entire horse program's $39 million budget was spent on holding horses in agency pens. Next year the costs are projected to grow to $26 million with an overall budget that is being trimmed to $37 million.

A day with Gus and Smiley

Tuesday this week Kayanna and Katrina Stowasser of Fort Collins were able to visit Gus and Smiley, two of the original Miracle Horses rescued from Dekalb, ILL when the slaughter plant was shut down by a Supreme Court Ruling.

This was a very important day for these two girls who have followed the story of these horses from the beginning and were there to see them arrive at Denkai from the Stockyard.

The Girls received some wonderful information from Christine Schultz who has fostered these two TB horses for the last year and has done a wonderful job in caring for them. Christine is so intelligent and has a wealth of knowledge to share.

We arrived home around midnight from our daily adventures, both girls tired, but having fulfilled a very important need. Katrina is well on her way to finding her career goal thanks to this project and Christine, I look forward to watching her blossom with this!

Sweetheart is just that, an amazing, intelligent sweet girl! She is 9 months old and has quite a story to tell. Sweetheart was purchased by her previous owner from a woman in the Galeton/Eaton area that was recently convicted of animal cruelty for starving a horse resulting in death. This precious little girl has entered our Sanctuary because the woman who purchased her is no longer able to care for her or any of her other animals due to alcoholism issues. This curiously wonderful little filly has a special need, she has a very large hernia that will require surgery and she needs your help to make this possible or she faces serious health complications. Sugar Babe Update, End of June

Sugar Babe continues to recover. This week she was visited by Dr. Michael Suit of Timnath, CO who sutured her finally healed puncture wound and then floated her teeth. She had a history of ulcers in her mouth from a long lack of dental work, a lot of the reason she was having a hard time gaining and holding her weight. It is very painful for a horse to chew when they continually bite into the sides of their mouths or on their tongues. The below listed animals are just a few of the many in need at a local rescue with only 1 week left to find placement. If these animals do not find placement, they will be transported to Denkai Sanctuary until placement can be found.

Approx. 6 year old Molly Mule. Trained to ride, needs advanced rider has been on trails, has some trust issues with new people, but patience will get you a long way with her.

TB mare, lameness issues, age unknown. Some of the lameness may be fixable, but we are not sure at this point.

Registered QH Mare and yearling Filly. Both need training and are pretty green.

TB Mare, Fairly young, trained to 3rd level dressage.

Mini molly Mule, trained for children to ride, age unknown.

Kiger mustang mare and colt, both are friendly, but need more halter training, etc.

Must stay together, mustang gelding and John Mule, both are seniors, not ride-able.

These goats are all very friendly and would make great pets, most look like a nubian type breed.

Female Pot Bellied Pig. Pretty shy of people, needs a buddy! We are not sure on her age.

Steer, young, maybe 2 years old. Friendly and food motivated.

Donkeys, all jacks from what I could tell, all are incredibly friendly.

Weld County Rangers Help Animals In Need

As part of their once a year community service project, local children ranging in age from 6 years to 15 dedicated their Father's Day weekend this Saturday to the Animals! Working right along side their parents, the Weld County Rangers 4-H Club, led by Kathy Seelhoff of Greeley, dove right into the task of helping homeless animals residing at Denkai Animal Sanctuary near Grover, CO.

The Weld County Rangers 4-H Club is a group of girls and was one of the hardest working volunteer groups we have had at our Sanctuary. The parents even dove into the task of helping to clean pens, children helped to exercise and graze horses, socialize puppies, and finally, build a yard for incoming chickens and turkeys that are being left behind during the foreclosure crisis we are facing here on the front range.

Denkai is always looking for groups to help with community service projects at the Sanctuary. These projects include; building, clean up, horse training, daily volunteer work, and much more. Alcoholism Hurts Animals Too

Alcoholism is a disease. Not only does it take a toll on a person's personal life and well-being, their friends and families, but also their pets.

We have seen many an animal come into our sanctuary because of this issue. The first was a beautiful purebred collie. The woman literally had to sneak out of her house with her child when her husband was away to bring us the dog, because when her husband drank, the dog, then the wife were both abused. The latest rescue to come to us involves 6 chickens and 2 ducks, one of which is currently fostered as it is only 1 week old. The person had purchased these at a local feed store and was then arrested on a repeat DUI charge, thrown in jail and will be there for a while. All of these birds were without food and would have starved to death without a place to go.

Think Before you Drink. Drink Responsibly, think about the effects this has on your children, friends and especially your pets, those that rely on you to feed and care for them. Take responsibility for your actions!!

Sugar Babe Days 2-5 in Recovery

Sugar Babe has shown great strides in her recovery she still has rarely lifted her head from her hay and has really enjoyed getting out to graze on fresh grass a little every day. She has been on antibiotics and we have worked at flushing out her wound. On day four, it finally flushed clear without any more sign of infection. She has shown her personality finally today too! I took her out to graze on some fresh grass and when we were headed back to her stall she planted her feet and went oh no you don't! I want the green grass, I'm not moving! I had to laugh, she is feeling alive again! This horse is amazing, for what she has endured and for her will to live through it and recover.

Day 5: The brown patch on her hip is from Comfrey Root, an herb used in drawing out infection and swelling, it works wonders.

Plains Sugar Babe, nearly starved to death

Plains Sugar Babe is her registered name, she is now 25 years old. She was once a beautiful, thriving young mare, born in Loma, Colorado to a Miss Leo Royal and Mr. Plains Bar. Sugar Babe has been through six owners since her birth in 1983. Some treated her like royalty and others forgot to care or worked her so hard she nearly fell over.

Sugar Babe was sold as a children's horse to previous home. The child was to take care of this horse, feed her, ride her, provide for her. Well that child found other interests and Sugar Babe was not one of them. Parents, before you purchase or adopt an animal for your children, make sure that the entire family understands that this is a lifetime commitment, not just a few years or couple of months until the fad wears off. This is a living, breathing, sentient being that is going to rely on ALL of the family to help care for them. There is a lot of money involved in veterinary care, the cost of feeding, and time in working with an animal. If the care stops, you are all responsible. All it takes is to put yourself into the shoes that animal is standing in. For Sugar Babe this meant alone, standing in a small fenced area staring at that door to your house where she knows you come out of that door to feed her, waiting for days and watching you walk right past her to get in the car and go grocery shopping or to a friends house. Her water is low, she has to ration it, survival kicks in as she realizes that nobody is going to care for her, she has been forgotten. She sheds a silent tear. How would you feel?

Friday night, Sugar Babe came to our Sanctuary, her current caretaker fulfilling a promise to her previous owner never to run her through the kill sale. That did not protect her from starvation or an injury that festered for four months, a puncture from a t-post into her rear hip. Sugar Babe's hooves and lower legs along with her right side were covered in horse manure, a sure sign that her stall was not cleaned. She hardly lifted her head all last night and into today from her hay and senior grain. Finally, this afternoon she stopped to take a look at her surroundings. She found a wonderful friend in Michelle, one of our incredible volunteers who helped to give Sugar Babe a bath and scrub the manure from her sides and hooves. She immediately perked up, listening, hearing the other horses, though she has to stay separated for now for the special care she is receiving. She is alive again and she needs your help to begin to thrive.

Bandit Needs a Home!

Well, Bandit is down on her luck (again) and she doesn't know why. She's hoping to get lucky FOREVER this time.

Here's her story:

"Hi, my name should be Mushy Love Girl Bandit 'cuz that's who I am. I was down on my luck a few years back when my unfeeling person dumped me in the Buckhorn Canyon to fend for myself. I didn't have any practice doing this as my only experience was being a loyal and loving dog. But good fortune found me and my buddy and we both found new homes. So I loved my new family with all my might. I am quiet and like to follow my person around and just lay down quietly near them...this makes me feel good and I hope my loving companionship makes my person feel good too! All was going very well for 5 years but then the children grew up and moved away and now, much to my heart break, my adult people don't want me anymore. No one deserves to lose their home...much less twice. I am ready made. I am house trained, mature and have good manners. Given a preference, little kids aren't really my bag...even though I do OK. I don't want to be all alone during the day so it would be the cat's meow (terrible metaphor) if I could keep company with someone who works from home or is retired. Also, steps are easy but jumping in a car is a bit difficult. I promise I will love and be loyal to whoever wants me forever."

As you can hear, it is a sad story. I ask each of you to please search your heart and database for Bandit's final home. She deserves to get lucky forever.

This is a very nice, low-maintenance facility, a lot of farm equipment is coming with the property. We have raised $30,000 so far towards our $60,000 goal. 9 Goats In Need Find Sanctuary

Nine goats from Colorado Springs have found Sanctuary at Denkai. These goats were becoming neglected due to owner depression issues. He started with three goats and ended up with 8. These goats have not had a lot of handling, so were pretty wild when they first entered our Sanctuary, but have calmed down tremendously, 5 of these were bucks and have been castrated thanks to the Help of Dr. Barb Roberts of Loveland, CO. The three females are all very pregnant and due any day for kids. We are looking for homes for the male goats in a couple of weeks.
